Forests & walks in the local area
There is such beautiful nature and forest in our area; some of the forests are perfect for short walks, while others offer great opportunities for longer, well-marked trails.
Houlbjerg Forest
Houlbjerg Forest is located in the neighboring village of Houlbjerg, about 1.3 km from Fru Larsen (about a 2-minute drive)
The forest offers forest trails and routes through both deciduous and coniferous woodlands, which are ideal for walking or running, as well as excellent opportunities for mountain biking. The forest terrain features gentle slopes and marked trails ranging from 5 to 6 km in length.
The forest is registered as a site for birdwatching with many species, making it attractive to ornithologists and nature lovers.
Bidstrup Forest
Bidstrup Forest surrounds Bidstrup Manor, approximately 2.1 km from Fru Larsen (about a 4-minute drive)
The forest features streams, bogs, lakes, meadows, and trails dotted with many ancient monuments. There are several historical sites, such as Bronze Age burial mounds and long barrows from the Early Neolithic period—fascinating for those interested in both nature and cultural history.
There are marked trails and hiking routes near Bidstrup, including a blue route of about 4.5–4.8 km that takes you through nature, along field edges, and through historic areas near the Voer Mølleå.
Perfect for walking and great opportunities for mountain biking
The natural environment here is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including small birds, deer, wading birds, and damselflies by the lakes—a rich ecosystem to explore.
Nature Trail: Walk from Laurbjerg to Silkeborg via the Railway Trail
One of the most accessible nature trails in the area runs along the old railroad line from Laurbjerg.
It is a paved, car-free nature trail where you can both walk and bike.
The route runs from Laurbjerg toward Thorsø and the rest of the Banestien, which is approximately 34 km long in total and winds through varied landscapes featuring forests, meadows, lakes, and streams. You can choose shorter sections depending on your preference and energy level.
Pindsballe Hill
Pindsballe Bakke is a natural hill area in Favrskov Municipality, part of the hilly landscape near Essendrup Forest, approximately 2.8 km from Fru Larsen (about a 3-minute drive)
Pindsballe Bakke is a natural ridge or hill in central Jutland, formed by the moraine landscape of the Ice Age, and is characteristic of the hilly areas in Favrskov near Lerbjerg and Svejstrup.
Nature and biological interest: The area is registered as a site for birdwatching and diverse natural habitats, particularly in combination with neighboring areas such as Essendrup Forest, making it an excellent spot for birdwatching and other nature experiences.
For hiking and nature experiences, the hill itself and its surroundings are ideal for walks, birdwatching, and enjoying nature in the open, hilly terrain. The terrain consists of natural woodland with natural trails.
Essendrup Forest
Essendrup Forest is a small wooded area and nature site in Denmark, located in Favrskov Municipality, near the village of Laurbjerg. It is a popular spot for short walks and nature experiences in a forest setting and is particularly known for its approximately 2.5-kilometer-long nature trail.
Nature Trail: There is a marked walking trail of about 2.5 km through the forest, where you can enjoy the forest’s atmosphere and tranquility.
Protected area with ancient monuments: In the area surrounding the forest, there are several burial mounds—ancient burial sites that are protected and situated within the wooded terrain, adding a touch of history to your walk in the woods.
The forest is located on private property, but visitors are allowed to walk through it. However, bicycles are not permitted, and the area may be affected by vegetation and seasonal conditions.
Fishing
Remember that a fishing license is required for recreational fishing in Denmark.

The stretch between Laurbjerg and the Gudenå River is managed by the Langå Angling Association. You can purchase day passes in Laurbjerg at the Shell station. Links: lystfiskeri.dk and lilleaaen.dk
The stretch of the river at Bidstrup (downstream from Laurbjerg) is managed by the Hadsten Angling Association.
Day passes typically cost around 80 DKK and can be purchased at locations such as Q8 in Hadsten and BB Marked in Laurbjerg.
